Summary

Chapter 14 is titled “All the Possibilities.” Joan's brothers want to set traps to catch the animal that killed Mere. Joan worries they will catch a pet. Joan tells Junior and George about finding Victor, though he did not recognize her. Flo suggests that he chose to leave her. Joan says she will be back with Victor in a few days, and says they can ask him about it then. She dreams she is trying to cross a field, but her high heels keep sinking. She becomes frantic when she hears Zeus crying. She wakes with a charley horse. She thinks about Zeus's sobs and screams in her dreams. This wakes “something in her that she wasn't sure was supposed to be awake” (197).
