Part 4, Chapter 23 Summary
Three weeks after Miles mentioned his proposal to Bea, Walt Comeau comes bounding into the Empire Grill. Walt is bragging about his honeymoon with Janine and trying to rub salt in Miles' wound-a wound that doesn't exist. Miles is actually sort of enjoying the sense of freedom. Much has happened in the past three weeks. Janine got her divorce, had a bargain basement wedding, having had to bribe Tick with an internet hookup to get her participation, and has been on her honeymoon. Miles, in the meantime, has been in and out of the hospital with a mysterious disease that he dared not suggest to his doctors was the direct result of having been visited by the ghosts of his mother and C.B. Whiting. Horace is beating Walt at gin, as usual, and Miles discusses with David in hushed tones...
