Summary
In Section IV, Daniel hitchhikes north with a man named Bill and talks to him about the events of "that night" (182). He tells Bill that he is meeting his sister Cathy at a destination at the end of the line. Bill takes him through back roads to find his sister. Bill talks to Daniel about the marks on his body, mostly scars caused by accidents or fights. Bills tells tales about contractors and the "world of haulage" (184). They stop on a back road in the Borders; Bill tells Daniel that when he first saw him, he thought he was a little girl. Bill, older than Daddy, takes Daniel's hand and Daniel holds his breath.
