Summary
Cathy and Daniel go to Vivien's house on weekdays for their lessons. Cathy often disappears in her own world and goes outside into Vivien's garden, avoiding the lesson altogether. Vivien's lessons depend on whatever her interests or thoughts are at the time. She lives a comfortable and safe life that seems different for Daniel. Daniel muses that "violence did not define Vivien, like it did Daddy" (88). He comes to realize that he prefers the inside world to the outside, and the "comfort of it all" (88). Cathy desires more lessons on science, and Vivien provides them with books on technology and biology that she keeps in her library. When Daniel asks Vivien what she does, she says "nothing" (90).
