Summary
In the bathroom, Elliott wishes he could be more like the cat sleeping in the tub (17). Jerry, Meg, and Kennedy B. enter. They say the reporter, Janet Ardmore, is a liar with a "strange view of the world" (18). The cat leaves. Elliott keeps asking them to explain what they are talking about. Meg is annoyed.
Their boss, Glimm, is on his way with a portable scraper. They are going to destroy Elliott's mind so it looks like he sustained "brain damage...from the beating" (18).
Jerry gives Elliott a paper to sign, consenting to the procedure. Then, when Kennedy B. says they are "Miles and miles up shit creek," Elliott has another memory (18). He sees the creek from his childhood, the snow and sled, his childhood home. He sees his mother and their dog.
