Point of View

Eliza and Her Monsters is a first-person narrative told from the point of view of a teenage girl who has created a successful webcomic. While Eliza’s identity is revealed to the reader, Eliza likes to maintain her anonymity when it comes to Monstrous Sea. Eliza’s perspective is narrow and isolated. She does not interact with many people and withdraws into her created world.

Eliza’s creative pursuits are in contrast to her family, who is more athletically inclined. Athletics builds communities between athletes and spectators. Eliza does not feel a connection to it. Even though Monstrous Sea is successful and has millions of fans, Eliza does not feel a sense of connection with those spectators. Instead, Eliza creates Monstrous Sea for herself, keeping her view of the world narrow.
