Summary

Chapter 28 begins with Eliza deciding not to respond to Wallace’s email until they are back in school. Eliza remembers reading about Wallace and the accident in the Westcliff Star, the local paper. Eliza passes Wallace a note in class, asking if he is okay and he responds that he believes so. They do not discuss the email, but Eliza feels that “sometimes trying to read him is like trying to read a brick wall” (243). Later, Wallace brings up the fact that they did not discuss the email and he feels that maybe it was too much for Eliza to handle. Eliza reassures him that it was not. Eliza kisses Wallace and tells him that he took too long to surprise her.

Chapter 29 jumps ahead to spring break and Eliza’s family is taking a camping trip. Eliza’s parents do not allow...
