Point of View

This story is told by a third person point narrator from the perspective of Scott. The narrator is not omniscient, proven because Scott’s thoughts and emotions are included in the narration, but the thoughts and emotions of other characters are shared only if those characters say how they are feeling. The focus on Scott is important to allow the author to follow Scott’s weight loss as well as his mental health through his ordeal. The third person point of view keeps the reader from getting too emotionally connected to Scott. Because the story is more about the relationship between Scott and Deirdre, and the changes in the people of Castle Rock, the author does not want the reader to get too emotionally involved in any one character.
