Summary
In Chapter 4, during the race, Scott did not feel challenged or tired until he reached the ninth kilometer of the race, the part that included Hunter’s Hill. He could still see Deirdre ahead of him going up the hill but he no longer thought he could beat her. After he crested the hill, however, he experienced what he realized was a runner’s high. He felt renewed and elevated. As he approached the finish line, there were booms of thunder and Scott began to feel the first drops of rain. As it began to pour rain, Scott kept Deirdre in his sights. Deirdre looked behind her and saw Scott getting closer. A few minutes later, she glanced again. This time she tripped and fell down hard.
