Part I, Chapters 13-15 Summary
Edward is not so calm or collected as Charlotte. He wanders the castle grounds and ends up falling asleep under Ottilie's window. Edward thinks it will be splendid if the new house can be done in time for Ottilie's birthday, so he makes all the workers double their efforts. With Edward acting so irrationally, the Captain feels he can not leave Charlotte alone to deal with the situation.
Meanwhile, Edward does what he can to court Ottilie. The Captain and Charlotte do whatever they can to keep the two separated. Edward and Ottilie, in their few moments alone together, talk about how cruel it is that the others keep them apart. Edward tells Ottilie that he knows Charlotte is in love with the Captain and wants a divorce. Edward loves imagining that he is married to Ottilie...
