Ellie is the 17-year-old protagonist of the novel. Ellie is the last in a long line of powerful Lipan Apache women. She inherits the power to call and control ghosts from her mother. When she is 12, her dog Kirby dies, and she calls his ghost back to Earth. Kirby was her best friend in life, and he remains so in death, too. Ellie gives a presentation to her class about ghosts and tells her classmates about Kirby. When a boy expresses disbelief, Ellie decides to make Kirby appear and howl in order to prove her point. However, she does not expect that Kirby’s howl will be so powerful that it shatters all the windows and gives everyone in class a bloody nose. Almost everyone at school dislikes (or is afraid of) Ellie after that, so she remains a social outcast.
