Summary
The novel is narrated in third-person past with a close focalization on Ellie, the 17-year-old main character. Ellie is a Native American from the Lipan Apache tribe with magical powers she has inherited from her ancestors that give her the ability to call and control ghosts. She lives in a world much like our own, but magic from all cultures is real and normalized. In Chapter One, Ellie played fetch with her ghost dog, Kirby, who had been with her since before she was born. After he died five years prior, she had called his ghost back to her.
