Selin is novel’s the protagonist. Either/Or chronicles her sophomore year at Harvard University. Selin is a Russian major who wishes to be a writer someday.
Selin is an astute chronicler of human nature. She points out the various ironies and hypocrisies of society, as she sees it. Selin tends to feel trapped in social situations and overthinks every word she says. Selin’s desire to come across as interesting cripples her, often rendering her silent. Generally, she bases her opinions off media consumes. She is preoccupied with living an aesthetically pleasing life.
Selin spends the majority of her year pining after Ivan, her elusive crush. Ivan is manipulative and emotionally abusive. Not only does Selin miss their friendship, but she also mourns the loss of the romantic relationship she never got to have with Ivan. Towards the end of the novel, Selin begins to explore her...
