Boundaries
Vivian's quest to find her new home in another world sees her exploring all kinds of places in and around where she lives. She leaves her house every single day to go to particular places she has in mind. This often involves encroaching onto places where people do not normally go without good reason. As a result, she sometimes gets into trouble for going to these places.
Vivian plans beforehand which boundaries she is going to cross that day. Every day the first boundary of the house is crossed but after that it changes each time. Sometimes the boundaries she crosses are literally - during one time searching for her other world, she goes "underneath Merchant’s Arch and close my eyes, hoping for a transformation – an arch is surely as good a portal as any” (63) but sometimes crossing boundaries means venturing into unusual places.
