Vivian Lawlor
Vivian Lawlor is the main character of the novel, through whose unique perspective one can see the world in which she lives. Everything seems more different, and particularly child-like, with her observations and the descriptions she uses for everyday things and places. Her often strange interactions with other people make more sense when framed by her inner commentary. Her moving into her great-aunt's house proves to be the catalyst for her daily adventures.
Every day she makes a point to go to certain places within the city, often for reasons many would consider strange. She chooses places based on the types of names they have and even gets a goldfish on the way home one day because of its color.
