Efrén Nava
Efrén Nava is the protagonist in Efrén Divided. At the outset of the narrative, the middle schooler lives with his parents and younger siblings, Max and Mía, in a small studio apartment. While he loves his family and relies on them for support, he craves solitude and retreats to the bathroom where he can read in the bathtub alone. In Chapter 1, when he is on the way to school, his best friend, David announces that he is going to run for student body president and asks Efrén to go to the meeting with him. Efrén is disinterested in participating in the election, but he agrees to support his friend. At the meeting, their classmate Jennifer is the only other student running. Later in the library, Efrén and Jennifer talk about books and their fear that their parents will be deported...
