Summary
Tara recalled a time that her paternal grandfather was saved from an accident on the mountain at the start of Chapter 25, “The Work of Sulphur.” He hit his head after being thrown from his horse. He made his way home and the family attributed his deliverance to safety to late family members’ spirits. When Tara returned home per Audrey’s call, she found that her sustained third-degree burns and melted skin. He caused an explosion by cutting a full gas tank from a car. Tara’s mother and her crew of women tended to him through the night, applying salve. His esophagus and lungs were also burnt in the accident. Tara did not tell Nick the details before she left BYU, and she worried her worry her strep was still contagious. Her father was weak and almost died multiple times throughout the first night...
