Humanity
Part of the premise of this novel is that Bella Swan is a human who is in love with a vampire and therefore aspires to become a vampire herself. Edward has been a vampire for several decades and knows what Bella will miss when she becomes a vampire herself. For this reason, Edward continuously drags his feet about agreeing to a set date for Bella's transformation, hoping she will be able to enjoy a great number of human experiences before her transformation.
Another part of the premise of the novel is the fact that Bella's good friend Jacob is a werewolf.
