Summary
In “Harlem,” Harold Kane, got off the Lenox Avenue subway. He saw “the skeletal ruins of the Islamic Temple” (163). He felt overwhelmed by “some concealed misery” (163). After walking through the neighborhood, Harold went to Harlem Square. He listened to a preacher talk “about the plight” of black people “in this racist society” (167). The preacher regarded Harold as if he were in disagreement with his message. Harold could show no emotion. Then he saw police “trying to break up a restless crowd” (174). The crowd threw bricks at the police cars. They were angry about a young black boy who had been killed by police. Harold moved away, “watching the disturbance” in the reflections of the shops windows (175).
