Summary
In Chapter 10, “Miami Beach,” in the fall, Chloé and her family convene in Miami for Wolfgang’s birthday. Chloé has been “writing about tennis for GQ” all summer (227). Chloé’s mother is along too. Chloé is glad for her presence.
Chloé later tells her mother she does not “want there to be a day” when she is not Wolfgang’s “favorite person” (230). Chloé’s mother references her own motherhood experiences, admitting she was afraid to part with Chloé when she went to college.
At lunch the next day, a woman approaches the table in search of money. Chloé’s mother always wants to help people. Chloé thinks the woman is scamming them. Her mother insists she did not raise her “to be so cynical” (234).
