Tony

Tony is a young boy from the Coromandel who finds himself shuttled across the globe to the colony of Virginia. At the outset of the novel, Tony is inquisitive, gregarious, and outgoing, often making friends in and around his hometown and quickly assimilating to life in London. He has dreams of becoming a doctor and is eager to travel the world, in part because a fortune teller informed him it was his fate to do so.

When Tony first arrives in the colony, he is subjected to harsh abuse by an overseer named Ralph Ganter who eventually comes to possess Tony's bond of indenture. When Ganter's abuse leads to the death of one of Tony's friends, Sammy, he becomes increasingly forlorn about the state of the world and is invigorated only by his new master Archer Walsh's passion for travel.
