Summary

The summer after Bristol, Marge, and Martin die, African slaves begin to arrive in Jamestown. Two of them, Solomon and Gumby, become friends with Cuffee and Tony. Lydia and Tony are married, and Lydia is hired out to Herman by the Pooles on a full-time basis. The Pooles fall ill with an ailment that begins to sweep through the colony. Dick becomes ill and Tony cares for him despite his protestations. Tony begins to suspect that Dick fears he will poison him as he did Ganter, so he begs Herman to minister to Dick, which Herman grudgingly does.

Master Poole becomes sick and dies of the disease, which prompts Mistress Poole to accuse Lydia of witchcraft. The members of the colony begin to avoid her and Tony. Dick recovers and thanks Tony for his services...
