Summary

Tony begins to find himself at home among the Monacan, but after some time they trade him back to the English in exchange for one of their own captives. Upon arriving in Jamestown, Tony is remanded to the custody of Parson Blair. Blair begins instructing Tony in the Bible and using him as his servant. Eventually, Tony is baptized.

After being baptized, Tony crosses paths with Anthony Johnson, a Black landowner who runs a plantation called Angola. Tony offers to put himself in Johnson’s service and returns to tell Blair of his decision only to find that Ganter is waiting in Blair’s house. Ganter accuses Tony of having killed Archer Walsh and stalks away. Later that night, a sickly man named Noah Giles presses a knife to Tony and reveals that he has been stricken with syphilis.
