Summary
Reports of servant mistreatment begin to run rampant in the colony as the winter drags on. The servants grieve Sammy’s death, though Dick remains optimistic about Virginia in general. One day, irritated by Dick’s unflagging positivity, Tony gets in a fight with him and nearly kills him. When Ganter rapes Tony a few nights later, he realizes that the same was likely done to Sammy and resolves to kill Ganter. Before he gets the chance, though, Ganter brings Tony to the Gray Foxe and begins gambling against a stranger named Archer Walsh. When Ganter runs out of things to wager, he puts up Tony, then loses him to Walsh.
Walsh brings Tony to Jamestown to collect some debts, and Tony is impressed that Walsh treats him kindly and can tell that he is not a Native American. Walsh teaches Tony...
