Fiji is the place where Taylor, her mother, and her father lived for a period of time while her siblings were away at boarding school. The location is significant to her because of the beautiful sensory experiences the island offered, heaven on earth for a child such as her, and the very important lessons about adulthood which it taught her: adults feel desire, desire can complicate others' lives, differences in race can cause people to treat others differently, etc.
