Donald Keene

Donald Keene is a former United States Congressman who unknowingly helped build the silo system in 2049. Along with several hundred others in Silo 1, he became one of the workers committed to overseeing the survival of humankind in the silos until he learned the truth. Keene thereafter endeavored to do everything he could to save as many people as possible. Throughout the novel, Keene is slowly dying from the inside out as nanobots war with one another for control of his body. Keene is utterly remorseful for his part in things, and to ensure the survival of the other silos – and his sister, Charlotte – Keene detonates a bomb that not only kills himself, but destroys Silo 1.
