Bijaz urges Paul to hurry as they emerge from the cul-de-sac. Stilgar intercepts them and takes charge of the dwarf. Imperial troopers close on the rebels' house, instructed to take live prisoners. Recognizing a soft hiss that grows into a roar, Paul dives for the ground as a "stone burner" vaporizes Otheym's house. The J-rays specially attack eye tissue. Paul briefly sees through a mist that fades to darkness. Still, without eyes, Paul identifies every detail around him, as in an "apocalyptic dream." Identifying himself as Muad'dib, Paul commands people wait for Stilgar to bring help. Paul cannot understand how he has entered a world beyond the present, but accepts it.
