Point of View

The novel is written in a combination of first-person and third-person perspectives. The author identifies the perspectives by titling each subsection of the novel. The majority of these are identified by the name of one of the main characters – Alyssa, Kelton, Henry, or Jacqui. There are some other subsections that include the word “Snapshot” in the title. These small sections are written in third-person from an omniscient perspective, and they focus on some other character. For example, a teenager named Dalton is in an airport in one of these snapshots. Dalton is never seen again except in a scene from Alyssa's perspective. In another of these snapshots, the reader gets another look at a girl named Hali who was briefly introduced when Alyssa was trying to buy water immediately after the Tap-Out.
