California

California is the overall setting of the novel. It is where Alyssa, Kelton, Henry, and the other main characters live, attend school, and work. The physical setting is important because the area is fed by the Colorado River, and the fate of that river has been questioned in recent years as water levels in the region react to lower water tables. The Colorado River is at the heart of the water crisis which is the basis for this novel. Also, specific settings are located in California. As the novel comes to an end, there are stronger rules in place to conserve water in California, but Alyssa finds she is unable to take a full shower because of the amount of water that is necessary.
