Deception
Deception is central in Drop Shot, by Harlan Coben. The biggest deception is the alternate identity of Duane Richwood. Duane is a tennis player, currently climbing the ladder at the US Open, and a client of Myron Bolitar. Duane had supposedly been a runaway, living on the streets and playing tennis is public parks, honing his skills and becoming one of the top players in the country. In reality, Duane is Curtis Yeller, a young man that had reportedly been killed after the murder of Alexander Cross six years earlier. Duane's mother had orchestrated his escape, and had helped him when she could in order to adopt a new identity and move on with his life. All goes well until Duane is recognized by Valerie Simpson and his mother feels that her only possible solution is to kill the young woman.
