Summary
In Chapter 11, the police investigation into the Commandant’s death has suspended indefinitely due to lack of evidence. Janina writes a letter to the police stating her belief the Commandant was murdered. She also states that she believes animals killed them, and she uses astrology to substantiate her points. Oddball comes to Janina’s house and says that he is suffering from lumbago. Janina and Boros help Oddball with some manual labor at his home. Afterwards, they drink wine together, sing songs, and converse amiably. Boros suddenly asks why some people are mean or evil. They agree that it can be caused by many environmental factors, but Janina states that it is ultimately caused by the astrological influences of Saturn. That night, Janina and Boros sleep together.
