Summary
In Chapter 5, Janina goes for a drive in her car and sees several men hunting birds. She threatens to call the police on them, but one of the men says that the police Commandant is in their hunting group. Janina, seeing that this statement is true, leaves in anger and dismay. Janina then thinks about a local doctor who once helped her treat various bodily ailments of hers. He was kind and effective. Janina returns home and is visited by a neighbor and friend of hers, whom she simply calls Dizzy. Janina used to be a teacher, and Dizzy—who is now 30 years old—used to be one of Janina’s students. Janina and Dizzy both like the work of English poet William Blake very much, and they collaborate on translating his poetry into Polish. One night, Dizzy notices a light shining near Janina...
