Rowan Chase
Rowan is a 17-year-old girl in modern times. Her mother is a black lawyer, and her father is a white oil tycoon. They live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a home that Rowan's paternal great-great-grandparents bought in the 1920s. Rowan has been raised to be hard working and conscientious, but she is ultimately the product of wealthy parents and has been largely protected from the cruelties of life. When Rowan's best friend, James, points this out, Rowan is furious, but at least partly because she fears it is true. When her summer internship falls through, Rowan happens to hear about job at the Jackson Clinic, a medical facility in a poor part of Tulsa. She has never been to that part of town before, and she realizes that the neighborhoods are quiet and well-kept, which is not what she really expected.
