Summary

Chapter 22 is “William.” William and his parents go out of town for the Memorial Day weekend. On Tuesday, William attends an event called the Junior-Senior Powwow. Cletus attends with Eunice. Cletus acts rudely, and William restrains himself from telling the other boys about Eunice's job as a prostitute. When William returns to town, he learns that a white girl named Sarah Page accused a black man named Dick Rowland of attacking her. Vernon says they plan to exact revenge on Dick and invites William along. Stanley intervenes, sending William for a stool for Vernon. William takes time to whisper for Ruby at the back door, warning her to stay away. Vernon insists William read the newspaper story. Stanley says he knows Dick and that Dick does not seem the type to attack anyone. Vernon invites Stanley to a meeting to discuss...
