Summary

Chapter 22 is “William.” William and his parents go out of town for the Memorial Day weekend. On Tuesday, William attends an event called the Junior-Senior Powwow. Cletus attends with Eunice. Cletus acts rudely, and William restrains himself from telling the other boys about Eunice's job as a prostitute. When William returns to town, he learns that a white girl named Sarah Page accused a black man named Dick Rowland of attacking her. Vernon says they plan to exact revenge on Dick and invites William along. Stanley intervenes, sending William for a stool for Vernon. William takes time to whisper for Ruby at the back door, warning her to stay away. Vernon insists William read the newspaper story.
