The Need for Freedom

Freedom is an important right that most take for granted, especially if they are accustomed to a democratic nation with freedoms built into the laws that govern daily life. The kinds of freedoms guaranteed by the American government are not always the kind of freedom a person craves. For example, some people feel trapped by a situation or limited by responsibilities. Others may face limited freedom because of society's expectations or even by rules that govern their actions. That is the case with some of the characters of this novel, with the blacks – including Jane McKeene – being limited because of their race. Characters of this novel face limited freedom because of race, opportunity, and their own expectations, and some of these characters are determined to change their situation in order to experience freedom.
