Ascot ties are worn by the men as symbols of their party affiliations, with the blue and red ascot a symbol of the Survivalist Party and the yellow and blue ties a symbol of the Egalitarian Party. The flags with those colors are similarly used to denote party affiliation.

Jane's Penny

A special penny is a symbol of Jane's connection to her family, including Aunt Aggie who gave the penny to Jane before she left Rose Hill. Jane wears it as a necklace and “there's a small bit of magic in it” (36) that alerts her to danger.
