Summary
Chapter 32, "In Which I Am Invited to a Battle," opens with Ophelia saying she is worried about Jane. The food is being severely rationed by this point, and even the wealthy are not getting enough, but several men stop by with food, including a rabbit and wild onions. She knows that some of these men will not have enough to eat because of their generosity. Jane notes that there are some good people in Summerland, but Katherine argues that those are the same men who are willing to do anything to make Summerland a success, including rounding up shamblers for the electric system. It suddenly occurs to Jane that some of the wealthy people from Baltimore might recognize Katherine, but she says she has already met some people and that "rich folks ... never remember the hired help" (372).
