Summary

Chapter 28, "In Which I Beg for Forgiveness," opens with Ophelia begging Jane for a letter. Katherine arrives shouting because Jane told everyone that she was "sent here because of a man's jealous wife" (27). She then whispers that she is pretending to berate Jane because she knows some of the girls are pressed against the door listening. Jane quietly relates her overall plan to get close to Sheriff Snyder and get rid of him. Jane just wants to escape with Katherine but Katherine says they have to save others in the town as well. Katherine plans to use the sheriff's emerging affection for her to get Jane reassigned as her Attendant. Jane is in terrible pain because of her back, but she feels better now that there is a semblance of a plan.
