Summary

Chapter 24, “In Which Some Time Passes and I Grow Restless,” opens with a lengthy excerpt from Ophelia's letter. She says she is including money for a new dress for Jane and writes of a tentative plan to expand Rose Hill. Jane is soon bored by the monotony of her days. Jane wants to find Lily and assumes she is in the wealthier part of town, but has not had a chance to search for her. She has heard nothing from Jackson and assumes he is dead. Jane pays Nessie, a girl from the brothel, to braid her hair in tight rows. She is the only black girl and notes that it is not a bad life, compared to fighting shamblers like Jane.
