Summary
Chapter 20, “In Which I Meet a Questionable Man of God and a Kind Madam,” opens with Ophelia's letter, saying that boredom is a problem at Rose Hill. Jane and Katherine arrive at the church. Pastor Snyder stops Jane at the door, saying that blacks are not allowed inside. He says Jane will not serve as Katherine's Attendant and sends her to the brothel. Jane is surprised to see children running around, playing and laughing, and the sight makes her hope that Summerland is not all bad. The Duchess is reading Gulliver's Travels when Jane enters. She tells Jane how things work, including where and when food will be ready.
