Summary

Part Two is set in The Cruel West. Chapter 16, “In Which I Have a Revelation,” opens with a letter from Ophelia to Jane. She writes that she is happy to receive Jane's letters and that it seems Miss Preston's has had a positive impact. Jackson, Jane, and Katherine are put on a train headed west. Miss Anderson reveals she has been intercepting the letters between Jane and Ophelia, and she throws Jane a packet of letters before the train departs.

Chapter 17, “In Which I Am Welcomed to Summerland,” opens with Ophelia writing that she misses Jane's “sunny disposition” (189). Jane had her copy of Tom Sawyer in the pocket of her Attendant's outfit and she puts her mother's letters with them. When Katherine cries, Jane apologizes for getting Katherine in this situation.
