Summary
Chapter 10, “In Which I Receive an Unwelcome Invitation and Am Forced to Accept It” opens with an excerpt from Jane's letter about how busy she is with social engagements and that she is “happy I am being taught my place” (128) in the process. Jane and Katherine reach school in time to clean up and face their day, though they are sleepy all day. Jane's nap is interrupted by Katherine, saying they have been summoned to Miss Preston's office. There, they find Daniel Redfern waiting. Mayor Carr has invited Katherine and Jane to serve as Attendants at a formal dinner because of their heroism at the lecture. Katherine is obviously happy but Jane's penny grows cold and she unsuccessfully tries to decline.
