Summary

Chapter 4, “In Which I Dodge Unwanted Advances and Engage in a Bit of Blackmail,” opens with an excerpt from Jane's letter in which she says she has lots of friends at Miss Preston's. During the ride, Jane learns that the professor speaking that evening has a theory on why the dead are rising. A young man named Jackson Keats, known as Red Jack because his skin has more of a red tone than tan, addresses Jane, calling her Janey-Jane. Their hushed conversation makes it clear they have spent time together. The reader later learns they have been romantically involved and that Jane feels Jackson broke her heart. Jackson says he has a surprise for her later. He is the one who smuggles books to her. He slips away as the rest of the group gathers. Katherine wants to know about Jackson...
