Summary
In the “Land Use” section, efficient use will increase soil moisture, crop yields, soil resiliency and decrease the reliance on applying fertilizers and pesticides. Forest protection, especially of old growth forest such as the Amazon, is crucial to avoid biological degradation. Since humans began farming, 46% of trees have been cut down. Rebuilding forest, tropical forests included, hold onto carbon and remove it from the global warming cycle. The continued deforestation accounts for up to 15% of carbon emissions globally. Coastal wetlands, salt marshes, mangroves and sea grasses store two years’ worth of global carbon emissions in the plant life. Over the course of history such areas have been damaged, from dredging and shrimp farms to condo developments and golf courses. In addition, the coastal wetlands provide protection from storms, ones that are increasing in amount and severity with climate change.
