Love

Once of the main themes of this book is the concept of love. Tanis' love for Kitiara lead him to betray his friends, but his love for his friends made him abandon Kitiara. His love for Kitiara make Tanis incredibly guilt-ridden because she fights for the opposing army and he feels that simply feeling love for her makes him somewhat evil.

Tanis is also in love with Laurana, the general of the "good" army. He feels like Laurana is the right choice for his heart because she is loyal and good.

Tanis often looks to the love of Riverwind and Goldmoon as inspiration. They work together to create good in the world and Tanis wonders what it would be like to be them.
