Dragonflight is the first of a trilogy that includes Dragonquest (1971) and culminates in The White Dragon (1978).
The setting remains the same, but in Dragonquest the focus shifts from F'lar and Lessa to F'nor and the shy queenrider Brekke. In Dragonquest, the tension between the dragonriders brought forward in time and the modern inhabitants of Pern increases; additionally, the battle against the planet-threatening Thread becomes more intense as weyrs, crafts, and holders join in searching for ways to combat it effectively. The question of Pern's remote past is first raised here, but Dragonquest culminates in F'nor's attempt to take his dragon to the planet where Thread originates. The theme of cooperation is much stressed in Dragonquest, as time and again the selfish interests of individuals threaten to undo the fragile alliance of Pern's differing ways of life.
