Part III, Ajima Island: Chapters 37 - 39 Summary
Once Pitt, Giordino, and Mancuso discovered that the deaths of the previous divers were due to poison gas, they were able to get the German government to set up pumps to remove the water from the tunnel, then use gas-removing devices to safely remove the gas to waiting tanker trucks in order to make the treasure cave safe for entry. While they wait, Pitt talks with the head of the German team, admiring the Messerschmitt 262s. In a gesture of gratitude, Gert Halder gives Pitt permission to take one of the forty planes and transfer it to his hangar in the United States. Halder tells Pitt it is a thank you for saving the lives of the remaining German divers and possibly saving his job and position. Pitt promises to restore the aircraft...
