One of Dirk Pitt's most passionate hobbies is that of collecting old vintage cars. On this particular day, he is taking his Stutz towncar to the Virginia Memorial Racetrack, the concours d'elegance show, where the car is judged on appearance and one lap around the track between classic vehicles that were designed and built as road cars. Loren Smith has accompanied Pitt to the race track, along with Al Giordino. While they admiring all the vintage cars, Frank Mancuso appears and tells them that the salvage operation of the Divine Star has been put on hold.
