Summary
Johnson arrives in the town of Deadwood in the South Dakota Territory and buries the bodies of Toad and Little Wind. He checks in at the Grand Central Hotel, owned by a man named Sam Perkins. Perkins allows Johnson to store the ten crates of fossil bones in the hotel. Johnson has dinner in the hotel and sees that the other guests at the hotel are all very tough-looking men. After dinner, Johnson sees that his wallet has been stolen from his room. When Johnson tells this to Perkins, Perkins informs him that there is no marshal in Deadwood and no law, so Johnson unfortunately has no recourse. Without his wallet, Johnson has no means of paying for passage out of Deadwood, which is unfortunate because Deadwood appears to be a very violent, dangerous, and lawless place.
