Summary
Around the campfire one evening, Cope begins to discuss the paleontological implications on evolution. George Morton argues against evolution and in favor of creationism, citing arguments of the day such as a pro-creationist argument put forth by famous scientist Lord Kelvin. Little Wind also argues against evolution, citing his Native American religious beliefs. The next day, Johnson and Little Wind go on an exploratory mission and discover tracks that indicate that they are being followed. They find the group that is following them and discover that it is Marsh’s expedition. When informed, Cope quickly concludes that the Marsh expedition has been following them during almost the entire journey so as to discover Cope’s intended site for searching for fossils.
